Standing at attention, waiting for roll off, seeing everyone standing still, and then suddenly at the blow of a whistle, surrounded by music; it's just something magical. It's a strong sense of belonging when you march with your band. You're all working together to make something for others to see and hear.
Last night at the Christmas Parade, it was just a sense of awe seeing all of us marching towards the start line, in step, and our drumline playing our cadence.
The band life is something else. Every Friday night during fall season, you spend it with over a hundred of your closest friends in the stands. You play your stands tunes, cheer on your team, perform a show that gets a standing ovation, and then skip the dance after the game because you're so dead tired. Then start it all again the next week.
You basically have no life other than band. In band, there's band, and then you can have a life. Your Tuesday and Thursday nights are dedicated to practices, your Fridays dedicated to field shows, and a few Saturdays are meant for parades and competitions.
And just as you think it dies down, it begins again with Winterline. So in essence, band is never over. Not even in the summer due to trips to see professional drum corps and band camp.
Band is basically life.
Now this blog isn't going to be completely dedicated to band. At some point it'll be politics, life, sheep, maybe even potatoes. Check back often for something.
